Growing Prominence of RMB

As an investment currency, the RMB is anticipated to gain momentum as China seeks to internationalise the currency. Current RMB-denominated initiatives, including the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (QFII) and Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (RQFII) schemes, will bring in liquidity to sustain economic growth and promote the RMB as an international currency. The inclusion of the RMB in the IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) currency basket this year will also boost Beijing’s plan to make the RMB an international reserve currency by 2020.

RMB is the fifth most used currency for global payments with a market share of 2.31%.
